CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A bipartisan group of Charlotte-area state legislators want to make sure the thousands of political animals who will pack the city for the Democratic National Convention can buy liquor on Labor Day.

The proposed legislation would keep Alcoholic Beverage Control stores in Mecklenburg County open on Labor Day Monday for this year only. The state's alcohol control system requires ABC stores to close on Sundays and five holidays.

The holiday exception means local stores wouldn't be closed for two days in a row, allowing restaurants, hotels and caterers to stock up on spirits ahead of the convention. The three-day Democratic convention begins the day after Labor Day.

Mecklenburg County Republican Rep. Bill Brawley says good manners require that Charlotte be fully prepared to host the arriving politicos and media members.
