Surfside Beach Police arrested a burglary suspect and recovered a Super Bowl ring belonging to Richard Conn, a former player for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Gregory Allen Owens, 40, is charged with 2nd degree Burglary and Grand Larceny. Police say Owens broke into Conn's home Monday afternoon and stole $1,150 in cash, Conn's 1973 University of Georgia football ring, and his 1974 Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl Championship ring. Officials estimate the commemorative rings are worth about $20,000.
Saturday morning a judge set bond at $25,000 for Owens.
When officers searched Owens home late Friday night they recovered the stolen items in his garage. Conn is expected to get them back next week.
"Thefts like these remind us that a certain, slim minority of folks will steal just about anything," Surfside Beach Police Chief Mike Frederick said, "with absolutely no regard for the potential emotional distress they may cause."
The four day investigation involved five additional state and local law enforcement agencies.
