WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina companies that rent vacation accommodations along the state's southern coast are seeing a big return in tourists as summer kicks off.

The StarNews of Wilmington reports the Memorial Day weekend is turning out to be one of the busiest in years for some local vacation rental companies.

Rental managers for properties in Wrightsville Beach, Kure Beach and Carolina Beach say the upsurge is noticeable after several years of families feeling they couldn't afford a beach vacation.

Intracoastal Rental says revenue for Memorial Day weekend at its properties on Wrightsville Beach is up by about 20 percent compared to the same period last year. Visitors are also willing to spend more for a prime location, with rental prices up about 10 percent this year.
