TIMMONSVILLE -- Dr. Andre Boyd will take over as superintendent of Florence Florence School District Four in Timmonsville on July 1st.
Boyd has been teaching in the district for the past 10 years and is the principal at Timmonsville High School.
School board leaders reached the decision to hire Boyd last Friday.
"I was incredibly excited just to be honest with you. Very honored," said Dr. Boyd.
Boyd replaces interim superintendent Matrell Sturkey. Board members appointed Sturkey last December shortly after Dr. Bertha McCants resigned after six years as superintendent.
Boyd says the district has worked hard in the past year to stay out of bankruptcy.
Last March, board members cut 19 positions to be able to make ends meet for the remainder of that school term.
Officials say the district is pretty stable in terms of its finances and meeting payroll and accounts payable every month.
The district owed $500,000 to the state retirement system and $90,000 in state health and benefits, but has significantly reduced its debt due to structured payments.
Dr. Boyd says that success has carried over to the classrooms and teachers are making great gains.
He's hoping to continue the progress.
Boyd explained, " I've served here going on 10 years. Know the community, know the students. I believe in community and I wouldn't invest in if if I didn't. So, I'm very excited about being given this opportunity."
Board members say his contract is only for one year because they want to see how things will go under his leadership.
They could extend Boyd's contract to three years after next school term.
