A deadly fire at a home on Bear Bluff Road Monday evening was accidentally set, according to Horry County Police Sgt. Robert Kegler.

Kathryn Jonita Vereen, 62, died from smoke inhalation, Horry County Deputy Coroner Tony Hendricks said. Her body was found inside her home after firefighters put out the flames around 5 p.m.

The Horry County Fire Investigator told police at the scene it appeared that Vereen had fallen asleep or lost consciousness on the bed with a lit cigarette.

Hendricks released Vereen's name following a Tuesday morning autopsy.
