A cancer prevention study called CPS-3 sponsored by the American Cancer Society is taking place at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.
Researchers say you can help them better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer.
Men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer are needed.
"These are all factors that we need a lot more information in order to be able to basically save lives. This is something that's very important to do . It will help us now. It will help us for generations to come," said Lynda Waller, Carolinas Hospital System.
It is very easy to get involved with the study. You will first need to schedule your appointment online here and complete a brief survey. It has to be done prior to your appointment. You can also call 888-604-5888.
The survey will ask you questions regarding medications, family history of cancer, lifestyle and other behaviors.
"We want to see a world of birthdays and less cancer," says Joan Billheimer, a cancer survivor who is leading the enrollment drive in Florence.
When you arrive at the hospital, you will be asked to sign a consent form, complete another survey, and provide a waist circumference measurement and a small blood sample. The sample will be taken by a certified, trained phlebotomist. You can expect to be at the hospital for about 20 to 30 minutes.
You will not have to pay for blood work and will receive periodic general study updates.
About 100 people were expected at the Tuesday session. There will be another study held in the Floyd Conference Center on May 12th from 9 a.m until 12:30 p.m.
