LELAND, N.C. (AP) - Officials in the southeastern town of Leland are providing few details about why they suspended five police officers without pay.

The StarNews of Wilmington reported that town manager David Hollis and interim police chief Mike James suspended the five Friday. The officers removed from their post at least temporarily include the deputy chief and two lieutenants.

Officials say their decision is based on information uncovered during ongoing investigations involving the Leland Police Department.

The town's latest action follows massive turnover within police ranks as a number of officers, including the most recent police chief, have been fired, forced out or resigned.

Leland Mayor Brenda Bozeman said she and other members of the council don't know why the officers were suspended.
