The anti-violence community group, U.P.W.A.R.D., has organized the local event "Breaking Ground: A Community Awareness and Peace Rally" that will take place Saturday, March 31st from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. on the grounds of A Father's Place on Hwy. 378 in Conway.

Guest speakers will address the reactions of local citizens to the Trayvon Martin case in Sanford, Florida and its impact on citizens in Horry County.

Saturday's rally is also designed to bring about awareness and understanding of the Stand Your Ground laws that have become the center of this controversial, national case.

Participants of the event will include Dr. Henry "Hank" Singleton III. Dr. Singleton was raised in Conway, South Carolina and is the son of local long-time pastor, educator and civil rights activist Rev. H. H. Singleton. He holds the Master of Divinity degree from the Morehouse School of Religion of the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Systematic Theology and Philosophy from The Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California where he was a Newhall Fellow. A black liberation theologian, Dr. Singleton is author of Black Theology and Ideology: Deideological Dimensions in the Theology of James Cone (Liturgical Press, 2002) and the forthcoming White Religion and Black Humanity (University Press of America, 2011).

He currently serves as Associate Professor of Religion and Theology at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina.

This is a free and open public event.

Everyone is invited to attend.
