Florence City Councilman Ed Robinson is upset that not enough black contractors are working on a new housing project.
Robinson says the city council passed a resolution asking the Florence Housing Authority to consider hiring some minorities for their new complex off Oakland Avenue.
Robinson says the few that were hired, were not from Florence.
"Our intent is that if we're gonna bring these kind of projects to the neighborhood, then we need to use neighborhood workers, so that the whole neighborhood can benefit from the projects that we bring, and this is not really happening with this project here," he said at a news conference, Tuesday.
Cynthia Williams, with the Florence Housing Authority, says they hired the general contractor, who hires his own subcontractors, and they can't dictate to him who to hire.
She says minorities are doing foundation, framing, siding, trimming , dry wall and painting for the project.
Williams says she gave a copy of the resolution to the general contractor. She says he told her for any remaining work, he will do his best to subcontract minority workers.
