According to a police report, Myrtle Beach police arrested Travis Bernard Webb, 32, for driving under the influence after he was seen speeding away from a house that had been on fire Monday night.
Around 10 p.m. Monday, neighbors called 911 after seeing flames coming from a bedroom inside the home. According to the report, the neighbor told police Webb was seen leaving the house and a few minutes later the house was on fire.
On the scene, police learned Webb's ex-girlfriend had rented the house, but the couple had broken up and the woman had moved out last month and had the utilities turned off. But according to the report, Webb had continued to live in the house, but failed to pay rent.
According to the report, the owner of the house was planning to evict Webb from the residence.
City officials placed an uninhabitable notice on the front door on February 22 after the utilities were turned off.
According to the report, Webb was arrested just after midnight Tuesday after police said he arrived at the house on Jennings Road, and tried to go inside, but was turned away because firefighters were investigating the house fire there. Police say Webb then returned to his vehicle and sped away. Police chased him and stopped him a few minutes later and placed him under arrest.
Eight fire crews responded to the fire and extinguished it. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
