HOLDEN BEACH, N.C. (AP) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to dredge sand that's two to three miles offshore from Oak Island and place it on Holden Beach, free of charge.

The StarNews of Wilmington reported that's because Holden Beach taps millions of dollars from the Federal Emergency Management as an "engineered beach."

Holden Beach got that designation because it foots the bill each year to replace sand that washes to sea. Town manager David Hewett says the end result is savings for the town.

Topsail Beach and Bald Head Island also have the designation.

The towns annually pull tax dollars to fight erosion in designated projects. In return they have seen hundreds of thousands of dollars pumped back into those projects.
