(AP) -- The South Carolina Supreme Court has changed its mind and decided that in some cases, divorced parents who pay child support may also have to pay for their children's college education.
In a 3-2 decision Wednesday, the justices reversed a ruling it made in 2010 about divorced parents and their requirements to pay for college.
The justices say a college education is critical to being successful, and children of divorced parents should have the same right to a college education as they would have had if their parents had stayed married.
The case involved a Midlands couple that divorced in 1993. The father first agreed to pay for his son's Newberry College education, but changed his mind. A Family Court judge ruled for the father.
