Florence County Senator Hugh Leatherman says he wants another term to continue the progress he's made to improve South Carolina's economy.
About 100 people came out to support Leatherman as he announced he was seeking reelection at the Leatherman Senior Center in Florence Monday.
Leatherman was first elected to the State Senate in 1980.
"I had no idea that the road ahead would have been so challenging, so full of great events and moments that will be cherished by me and my family for the rest of our lives. Nor did I know that the leadership roles that have presented themselves to us would have materialized. I did know that I wanted to help our region grow and prosper, and wow have we done that," said Leatherman.
The senator is credited with helping to bring many major industries to our state, including Boeing in Charleston and QVC in Florence.
Leatherman believes improving education for our children will continue to keep jobs coming into the state.
"We've got to have them educated to fill those jobs when we bring them here. That's why I push so hard for K-12 education, Florence Darlington Tech, Francis Marion to get our young people prepared and ready to fill those high tech jobs when we bring them here," added Leatherman.
He thanked his supporters for coming and pledged to continue working to improve our state.
"Continue serving my people, we've got wonderful people here and continue to improve our area and we will do that. I'm committed to that," said Leatherman.
At this point, Leatherman faces no Republican opposition for the June Primary and the General Election in November.
