MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) - Water quality and drainage pond experts met for the Grand Strand Stormwater Pond Maintenance Conference Saturday morning.

The group presented water pollutant and other studies to home owners association members and concerned citizens at the Springmaid Resort in Myrtle Beach.

The workshops discussed the importance of stormwater pond drainage systems and technology used in the field when maintaining and creating new ponds.

Conference organizer Chris Ramaglia said there are hundreds of these ponds in our area, and they serve an important role in the community.

"With all the things that are running off of the landscape, pollutants, stormwater going into these ponds, they (ponds) also serve to make sure that polluted water doesn't get out to our rivers and our other lakes and our ocean ultimately along the coast," said Ramaglia.

In the past five years, more than 800 storm drainage ponds have been created on the Grand Strand, said Ramaglia.
