The Florence County Sheriff's Office is investigating what led to a trooper firing a shot at a man during a traffic stop.
Sid Gauldin with the state Department of Public Safety says around 7:13 Thursday evening, a trooper stopped a man for a traffic violation on Ebenezer Road in Florence County.
Gauldin says the man gave false information to the patrolman and when the trooper went to arrest him, the man got out of his car and took off running near Trash Dump Road.
Gauldin says the trooper chased after the man. He says the suspect ran back to his car and started driving in the direction of the trooper and that's when the patrolman fired a shot at him.
Gauldin says the suspect wasn't hit and kept driving. He says the car was spotted off of I-95 in Dillon County and deputies began chasing the suspect, but they lost him after he got into North Carolina.
Gualdin says troopers there are trying to locate the car. He says South Carolina Highway Patrol's Office of Professional Responsibility is also looking into this incident.
