CONWAY -- Conway police have charged a juvenile with Attempted Criminal Sexual Conduct 2nd Degree after they say he attacked and tried to rape a teacher at Whittemore Park Middle School Wednesday.

Horry County Schools spokesperson Teal Britton said the boy is an 8th grader at Conway Middle School.

According to police, the juvenile knocked on the teacher's door and told her he needed to get his jacket from his locker on the 8th grade hall.

The teacher said she and the juvenile began walking in that direction when the boy pushed her toward the men's restroom. The teacher told police she put her foot against the wall to brace herself and she and the boy began to struggle. She said the boy pushed her head into his crotch and the struggle continued on the floor. The teacher said she got to her feet and began walking toward the main hall when the boy grabbed her and she screamed. She said the boy then ran toward the front doors and the teacher ran back toward her room.

Police say the vice principal reviewed the school's surveillance video and identified the juvenile.

"Our teachers here are safe. What happened last night was a first timer. In the nearly 20 years that I've been here something of that nature has never occurred and we certainly hope that it's the last," says Britton. "Anytime there's something that happens that compromises the safety and security situation it always makes us go back and revisit and review in terms of what happened should anything have happened differently and is there anything about our procedures that should change."

Police arrested the boy at his home without incident Wednesday night.

Conway Police spokesperson Catina Hipp says the boy is in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice. She would not release his age.

Britton says he has been suspended.
