CHESNEE, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a woman is recovering after she was accidentally shot by a deputy during a concealed weapons class in Chesnee.

Deputies say an instructor was showing a student the right way to hold her .22 caliber pistol Saturday when the gun fired, hitting the student next to her.

Crystal Smith was taken to a hospital and treated for shots to her arm and side. Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright says she will recover.

Deputy Calvin Smith is certified to teach the classes by State Law Enforcement Division. Deputies say the pistol wasn't secured before the instructor started helping the student.

Wright says Deputy Smith didn't know the gun was loaded but should have checked. Wright is outspoken in his comments that women should get concealed weapons permits for protection.
