A Little River man was booked at J. Reuben Long Detention Center Saturday, after police said he assaulted a child last week.

Robert Washington Watson, 38, is charged with Unlawful Neglect of a Child or Helpless Person and 3rd Degree Assault and Battery, according to an Horry County police report.

On February 2, officers were called to the school by the Department of Social Services after an 11-year-old student said Watson punched, kicked and choked her that morning. The report said the victim's sister witnessed the incident and confirmed her story. We're not releasing the name of the school to protect the identity of the child.

The victim had a bruise the size of a golfball on the left side of her face, and a scratch on the right side of her face, from a shoe Watson had hit her with, the report said.

Watson was booked and released Saturday.
