CONWAY, S.C. (WPDE) - Math students from a dozen schools in our area went head to head Saturday afternoon.

Middle school students from across the Grand Strand and Pee Dee competed in a MathCounts competition.

MathCounts is a national math enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement

WPDE Chief meteorologist Ed Piotrowski read the questions for the event. Many times the kids were buzzing in with the right answer before he could finish!

Brandon Lynch, 13, won the overall individual competition. The North Myrtle Beach Middle School 8th grader will be among those competing at the state level.

"I try to block out the reader and read the question myself and get a quick calculation, just get it in," Lynch said.

The winners from Saturday's competition will compete against other schools in the state on March 10 at Coastal Carolina University.
