North Myrtle Beach City Council passed the second and final reading of a new smoking ban ordinance Monday.

The new law to regulate smoking within city limits passed by a four to three vote.

Mayor Marilyn Hatley and council members Fred Coyne, Jay Baldwin and Hank Thomas voted in favor of the ordinance. Bob Cavanaugh, Terry White and Greg Duckworth voted against it.

The ban will affect smoking in restaurants, bars and certain vehicles. Council did remove mention of e-cigarettes from the ordinance.

The new rules will go into effect March 7, 2012.
