(AP) -- South Carolina officials say they plan to put new drivers through a more realistic road test before giving them a license.

The Greenville News reported that the Department of Motor Vehicles plans to put new drivers into more traffic than they usually face in the typical road test.

Those traditionally have been on neighborhood streets where there is little traffic.

DMV executive director Kevin Shwedo says he expects the more realistic road tests by this summer.

Jim Collins owns a driving school in Greenville and has 32 years of experience. He says DMV is using the same road test now that it did when he got his license.

He says drivers should be tested on four-lane roads and highways with faster speeds, heavier traffic and changing lanes.
