(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The board at the Department of Natural Resourceshas chosen its law enforcement chief to take over agency operations.

The State newspaper reported that the board chose Alvin Taylor to take over from the retiring John Frampton.

The 58-year-old Taylor has been with the agency for 35 years.

State senators had questioned the apparent forced retirement of Frampton by the board, most of whose members were selected by Gov.

Nikki Haley last year. A Senate committee has scheduled a hearing next week to question board members about how Frampton's departure

was handled.

Taylor is to take over March 17, the day after Frampton retires.

Taylor says he never expected to lead the agency, but was approached by board members about the idea last week.
