The State Law Enforcement Division's investigation into the Horry County Police Department is finished, and now South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson's office is reviewing what steps, if any, need to be brought against the department.
"The investigation file was just presented to us," said Attorney General spokesperson Mark Plowden. "Our role is to review the information and make a final determination."
Horry County Council and the Horry County Legislative Delegation asked SLED to review the Horry County Police Department after an anonymous letter made nine allegations against the department.
An internal review was completed by then County Administrator John Weaver, who dismissed all but one of the allegations that alleged "money and drugs which are confiscated often disappear from the evidence room."
Plowden expects the Attorney General's decision to take time.
"Don't expect anything for some time," said Plowden. "This may take months, not days or weeks, because of the amount of work and detail we have to review."
The Attorney General may request deeper investigations into the department before a final decision is made, said Plowden. "We're very diligent in our review. If more questions arise, we'll ask for an additional investigation."
