(AP) -- South Carolina's only federally recognized Indian tribe is suing the state over the right to gamble on its reservation.
The suit filed Tuesday by the Catawba Indian Nation also asks that local authorities be prevented from seizing gaming machines while the lawsuit moves forward.
The tribe was officially recognized under a 1993 settlement. Attorneys for the Catawbas say that agreement gives the tribe the right to conduct games to the extent that they are allowed anywhere else in the state.
Attorneys for the 2,600-member tribe say state laws allowing casino cruise ships mean the Catawbas can have gambling. They say gaming on the tribe's reservation near Rock Hill will bring South Carolina about 4,000 jobs.
A spokesman for Gov. Nikki Haley did not immediately comment on the lawsuit.
