(AP) -- Authorities reportedly used tear gas to restore order after an inmate dorm at a state prison in Ridgeville was locked down after inmates subdued a correctional officer.
Charleston area television stations report police and corrections officials moved into the dorm at Lieber Correctional Institution to restore order early Thursday morning. At one point there about 200 law enforcement officers at the prison and they are now leaving.
Corrections department spokesman Clark Newsom said earlier the dorm was put on lockdown after inmates subdued a correctional officer, taking his keys and radio Wednesday night. He said the officer was let go and was not injured.
Newsom did not immediately return phone messages Thursday about how the situation was resolved. He said there were about 300 inmates in the locked-down section.
