Reverend Larry Williams of Dillon County says he will never forget the day he made it out of earthquake-ravaged Haiti.
On January 12, 2010, the day Rev. Williams got there, an 7.0 earthquake hit the country.
Williams was in Haiti for a Christian mission-trip. He was there for three days after the earthquake before he was able to get a ride to the Dominican Republic so he could fly to Miami.
"What had happened kind of came to mind, you know, started coming back in the mind a couple of days ago and I got a call from one of the police over there, kind of wondering what I was doing today. I'm doing what I know to do is to commemorate this day as I'll never forget that time of the earthquake," said Rev. Williams.
He has traveled back to Haiti three times since the earthquake. Williams says he was there for the holidays and saw a big change in Port-Au-Prince.
Williams said, "A lot of infrastructure, a lot of roads and stuff are being built. A lot of the debris that was down on the buildings are up, and for the most part I see some of those tent camps being removed and people are being put in apartments."
Williams says he's happy to see all the positive changes. He says he feels as if its his mission to help the people of Haiti and plans to go back as often as he can for mission trips.
"From 2008, I started going to Haiti and I was sent there by God, and I felt like it was a mission and the mission isn't complete until God says it's complete," said Rev. Williams.
He preaches once a year to churches in the country.
Williams says his experiences in Haiti inspire him to show more love for those in need.
Reverend Williams is the senior pastor at Tabernacle of God Ministry in Dillon.
