Horry County police charged a 17-year-old girl with Unlawful Neglect of a Child for giving a child she was babysitting a prescription pill.

Olivia Smith of Carolina Shores, NC, was arrested Thursday.

A 37-year-old Little River woman told police she left her 4-year-old daughter with Smith from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on New Year's Eve. The woman returned home after Smith texted her and said her daughter had fallen several times, had hit her head and was dizzy.

The woman took her daughter to Seacoast Medical Center where doctors performed blood work. Results showed the child had the prescription drug Xanax in her system.

Smith later told police she gave the child a piece of the Xanax to calm her down and get her to take a nap.

The police report says Smith had stolen the prescription drug from her mother in North Carolina.

Smith is being held at J Reuben Long Detention Center without bond.
