The Florence County Coroner's Office says Michael Hawkins, 49, was shot and killed inside his home on Harmony Street New Year's Day.

Police say around 8:20 that evening, three men forced their way inside the back door of the home.

Florence police say Hawkins and his daughter were inside the house.

According to officers, one of the suspects held the daughter at gunpoint in one room, while the other two suspects held Hawkins at gunpoint in another room.

Police say they believe one of the men fired three rounds at Hawkins killing him.

His daughter was not harmed.

Officers say the men then ran out of the home going east on Harmony Street.

Police quickly arrived on scene and starting canvassing the community looking for evidence.

Officers also talked with neighbors to gain insight on what they may have seen or heard.

"We are investigating and we are looking into some significant leads right now. Hopefully, we'll have a resolution to the case soon. There maybe some witnesses out here that can help us with this. If there are some witnesses that know something regarding this case please come forward and help us out with this investigation," said Chief Anson Shells.

The Florence County Coroner's Officesays an autopsy is being performed on Hawkins' body at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston.

Neighbors gathered at the scene say the victim was a good person and father. They say he did a lot to help the West and East Florence communities.

Hawkins worked with the Florence Police Department's Camp Fever Program, Alliance For Youth, East Florence Community Organization, Florence Parade Committee, and the Levy Park Youth Activity Center.

If you have any information on this incident, you're asked to call the Florence Police Department at (843) 665-3191.
