About 50 people started 2012 off on a healthy and green note. They participated in a first day hikes event at Myrtle Beach State Park.
The free hike, from the National State Parks, is an initiative to ring in the new year getting fit and surrounded by nature. The ranger lead tour stops at points in the park to read facts about South Carolina land or quotes about nature.
"We can kind of throughout the year have a new year's nature resolution. Of how to use nature to help you get by, to help you get through some of that stress," Myrtle Beach State Park Interpretive Ranger Anne Wilson said.
State parks in South Carolina participating are Edisto Beach, Huntington Beach, Myrtle Beach, Givhans Ferry, Kings Mountain, Oconee, Paris Mountain, Table Rock, Landsford Canal, Poinsett, Lake Warren and Cheraw state parks. Also participating are Charles Towne Landing and Musgrove Mill state historic sites and Hickory Knob State Resort Park.
