Oliver named commander of SC Highway Patrol

(AP) -- The interim commander of the South Carolina Highway Patrol is getting the job.

Lt. Col. Mike Oliver has been leading the patrol since Col. Kenny Lancaster retired last month.

Public Safety Department Director Leroy Smith announced the appointment Wednesday afternoon.

The 52-year-old Oliver has been with the patrol since 1982.

The patrol has 804 troopers and 188 civilian employees.
