(AP) -- A Department of Motor Vehicles analysis says South Carolina election officials have bad information about voters who could be affected by a new law requiring photographic identification when people cast ballots in person.

The state Election Commission had reported that nearly 240,000 voters lack state-issued driver's licenses or ID cards. People can also use U.S. passports or military IDs to vote.

DMV Executive Director Kevin Shwedo said Wednesday that more than 207,000 of those voters either live in other states, have allowed ID to expire, have licenses with names that don't precisely match voter records or were dead.

Election Commission spokesman Chris Whitmire said Thursday the commission will remove the names of dead voters from the list as well some with names that don't match.
