Darlington County Sheriff Wayne Byrd says his office got a $1,500 fire prevention grant from FM Global.
The company presented the grant to Sheriff Byrd Tuesday afternoon.
Byrd says the money will help fire investigators more efficiently investigate and determine the cause of a fire. The department plans to buy computers equipped with software used to investigate fires.
In a news release, Byrd says FM Global has contributed millions of dollars in fire prevention grants to fire service organizations.
"At FM Global, we strongly believe the majority of property damage is preventable, not inevitable," said Michael Spaziani, manager of the fire prevention grant program. "Far too often, inadequate budgets prevent those organizations working to prevent fire from being as proactive as they would like to be. With additional financial support, grant recipients are actively helping to improve property risk in the communities they serve."
Sheriff Byrd says Darlington County recently formed an Arson Task Force made up of members from local law enforcement, the 4th Circuit Solicitor's Office, the Darlington County Coroner's Office, and fire departments in Darlington County.
