(AP) -- South Carolina's top law enforcement officer says his agency needs more money to make sure officers across the state can continue to access federal crime databases.
The State newspaper reported that State Law Enforcement Division Chief Mark Keel told lawmakers Thursday that the FBI has sanctioned his agency for not properly monitoring criminal records shared between states.
Keel says it's the first step toward the FBI revoking South Carolina's access to its criminal records files, which officers use to see if suspects are wanted in other states.
Keel says he needs $6 million extra in the next budget year for new computer equipment and additional people in the agency's technology department to get SLED back in compliance with the FBI requirements.
