WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - Contractors painting the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge have packed up for the winter, but that doesn't mean drivers will get a respite from traffic delays because of crews working on the span.
The StarNews of Wilmington reported the state Transportation Department says cold weather forced the painters to stop. Painting will resume in the spring. As of September, the painting contractor was one year late.
DOT resident engineer Wayne Currie says contractors will begin making mechanical improvements to the bridge this week.
The DOT will close the right lane on the eastbound side of the bridge from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday for the bridge maintenance. Currie says the DOT won't close the bridge during the holidays.
