GEORGETOWN, S.C. - Getting guns off the streets in an effort to reduce crime was the mission of the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office Saturday.
The agency held its first ever gun buy back. Officers collected handguns that were in working order, unloaded and placed in the trunk of the participants cars. Officers also checked ID's and no questions were asked about the guns.
Public Information Officer Carrie Cuthbertson says more than 30 handguns were exchanged for $100 Wal-Mart gift cards.
The Georgetown Ministerial Association also sponsored the effort.
The event was open to all Georgetown County residents.
