United States Attorney Bill Nettles' Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee handed out awards to several officers for excellence in law enforcement on Friday.
The luncheon was at Fort Jackson's Officers Club on Fort Jackson.
William (Bill) Knowles of Horry County received an award for his work with the 15th Circuit Drug Enforcement Unit.
Other awards went to Chief John E. Ewing of the Bishopville Police Department, Assistant Special Agent in Charge William W. Douglas of the Drug Enforcement Administration and Lieutenant Richard R. Gregory of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
The Strom Thurmond Awards for Excellence in Law Enforcement were started in 1980 by the late senator to recognize officers whose performance demonstrate the highest ideals of excellence in professional law enforcement.
In presenting the awards, United States Attorney Bill Nettles stated, "It is indeed an honor to recognize these four outstanding officers. Each of these officers exemplifies the best in law enforcement, serving their agencies, this state and our nation with distinction, integrity, and character, making tremendous personal sacrifices to ensure just enforcement."
