DARLINGTON -- The city of Darlington has given the owners of an apartment complex a deadline to fix a sewage problem.
Residents of Darlington Commons say a small sewage spill is leading to a big smell in their neighborhood.
Officials with the Department of Health and Environmental Control say a malfunction with the apartment complex's connection to the Darlington sewer line seems to be the problem.
Residents, like Sharon Bruce, say they are fed up and have complained about the sewage spill for a year.
"We don't have to live like this. This is not fair. As a matter of fact, my little grandbaby fell into it one day and that was kind of terrible for me. They don't have too much opportunity even though it's getting cold, they don't have too much opportunity to play outside because like I said the smell is unbearable."
City manager Howard Garland says Darlington commons has to have the problem fixed by January 17th, or the city may be forced to shut down the apartments for unsanitary conditions.
