(AP) -- Authorities say a Clarendon County woman has been stabbed to death after she came home and surprised a burglar.

Sheriff Randy Garrett says 28-year-old Christopher Heck of Huntington, W. Va., has been charged with first-degree murder and burglary.

Garrett says a South Carolina highway patrol unit pulled Heck over for driving under the influence Wednesday. They say they found stolen items and 47-year-old Charlotte Altman's identification.

At the Manning home belonging to Altman's uncle, deputies found her dead from multiple stab wounds. The back door had been broken.

Garrett says deputies think Heck was trying to rob the home Wednesday when Altman came home.

Heck was in jail Monday. It wasn't known if he had an attorney.

Deputies say Heck had been staying with his grandmother in the home next to Altman.
