(AP) -- Gov. Nikki Haley is traveling to the coast to speak at a meeting of South Carolina's maritime industry leaders.

The governor is scheduled to address the Propeller Club of Charleston on Tuesday.

Last week, Haley was credited by Georgia officials with helping work out a compromise that removed South Carolina objections to the deepening of Savannah River. The Port of Savannah, one of the Port of Charleston's biggest competitors, wants the river deepened to handle new larger cargo ships.

But some in South Carolina have harshly criticized the governor, saying approval of a permit should be based on science, not a compromise.

Senate Transportation Chairman Larry Grooms of Bonneau said South Carolina just helped its nearest shipping competitor.
