NORTH MYRTLE BEACH -- Hundreds of people held American flags during a Veteran's Day service at North Myrtle Beach Memorial Gardens Friday morning.
"It's important to support our veterans. They've done so much and get so little. They don't really expect a lot. Hopefully, we can show them the respect they deserve," veteran Harold Kelly said.
Kelly served our country from 1955 to 1977 and attends the Veteran's Day service every year. He is happy to see the crowd get bigger each year, but believes there's a group of people who are missing.
"The only thing I am disappointed in, I don't see very many youth, teenagers, and they're the ones who are forgetting what the veterans are doing or have done for this country," Kelly added.
Those who did attend sang patriotic songs, bowed their heads in prayer, listened to the Myrtle Beach Regional Pipe Band and watched a symbolic wreath laying ceremony.
"It's to respect the veterans. We all remember those who've not made it home. That's what the wreath ceremony is about. But today is to celebrate those veterans who did come home that served in honor for country and it's a day of celebration for them," Kelly said.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #10804, The American Legion Post #186, The Ladies Auxiliary in North Myrtle Beach, Our Lady Star of the Sea #2431 Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and Grand Strand Blue Star Mothers hosted the event.
