CONWAY --
Congressman Tim Scott took questions from a large crowd of students at Horry Georgetown Technical College in Conway Wednesday morning.
Rep. Scott talked about the importance of education in entering the job market with students of the Early College High School. He answered questions about South Carolina's illegal immigration reform, high school drop out rates, nutrition guidelines and making goals.
"However many goals you have set for yourself right now, double it," Rep. Tim Scott said. "Never mistaken a temporary setback as a permanent problem."
"I have a couple of goals with college that I want to achieve, but the way he put it into my mindset, it's like you can't just achieve goals, you have to strive for more and it makes you want to better yourself," freshman Reggie Stephens said.
Rep. Scott also explained the benefits and downfalls to the federal stimulus. "I thought it was just money that we got and didn't have to give back. He really speculated on how we get it and that we have to pay a little bit more back after we get the money," Stephens added.
Programs that Rep. Scott considers 'untouchable' when it comes to cutting back on the nation's debt included military funding and Social Security benefits. "I wouldn't take them away from those who are getting them now, but I would redesign it for people who are 45," he said.
The atmosphere was incredibly laidback. "He was really relaxed and humorous and a lot of people can relate to him, so I thought it was a really cool experience," Stephens said.
Congressman Tim Scott represents South Carolina's First Congressional District, home to Charleston, Myrtle Beach and 75 percent of the state's coast.
