ANDREWS -- Write-in candidates had a huge impact on the elections in the town of Andrews.
In the mayor's race, the only candidate on the ballot was incumbent Rodney Giles. He received 282 votes. Another Andrews resident, Sudha Patel, announced to run as a write-in for the seat, and she received 171 votes. Terrance Middleton did not run for his seat on town council to run as a write-in candidate for mayor. He received 109 votes. David Tisdale received 3 votes and Mattie McGee, 1 vote.
The Georgetown County Election Commission is trying to decide if there needs to be a runoff between Giles and Patel. If he needed a simple majority to win, Giles would have needed 284 votes, and he got 282. But it's not clear if write-in candidates could cause a runoff. This will be decided at a certification hearing on Thursday at 10 a.m.
On the Andrews town council, there are three expiring seats but only two candidates running. Incumbents Patsy Greene and Angela Anderson were on the ballot, and each received 292 votes. For the third seat, there were 525 write-in votes. The top write-in name was David Tisdale with 133 votes, and Mattie McGee got 128 votes. Whether there will need to be a runoff between them will also be decided at the hearing Thursday.
