KINGSTREE (AP) -- Williamsburg County has withdrawn its request for an application to build a landfill to handle 400,000 tons of garbage a year.

The Florence Morning News reports that county council has received a letter from state health officials acknowledging their application has been withdrawn. The county also agreed to notify the owner of the land with possible landfill sites that it will not be purchasing any property.

A group of landfill opponents had sued, alleging the state, without public notice, changed the permit to allow the landfill to accept 400,000 tons of solid waste a year instead of the original 35,000 tons.

The lawsuit also argued there was no need for the landfill.
