NORTH MYRTLE BEACH -- The contest for the Cherry Grove Ward in North Myrtle Beach was too close to call Tuesday night.

At an election certification hearing Thursday morning, the city announced a runoff would take place between Fred Coyne and the incumbent, Doris Williams.

Coyne was just 18 votes shy of getting the 50 percent plus one to win the seat outright.

Fred Coyne got 1323 votes, and Williams got 1157 votes.

Candidate William Ambrose Jr. got 196 votes.

The runoff is expected to cost the city about $4000.

There were two other elections in North Myrtle Beach Tuesday night. Incumbent Hank Thomas won the at-large city council seat. Incumbent J.O. Baldwin was also a winner, keeping the Crescent Beach Ward seat.
