(AP) -- The leaders of South Carolina's Senate and House have asked to take part in a challenge to the presidential primary.
The state Supreme Court said Thursday that Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell and House Speaker Bobby Harrell have filed papers to take part in the case.
Last week, Beaufort, Chester, Greenville and Spartanburg counties asked the Supreme Court to decide whether they should be forced to pick up part of the tab for the first-in-the-South Republican presidential primary on Jan. 21. They say the primary is a private affair and relies on an outdated law.
McConnell said last week that the Legislature had included the primary in the state budget.
