(AP) -- Government workers and retirees are scheduled to stage an informational picket in Columbia objecting to proposed cuts in Social Security.

The midday picket planned for Thursday is one of more than 100 being held at Social Security offices nationwide.

A number of groups, including the American Federation of Government Employees and the Alliance for Retired Americans are sponsoring the event.

The picketing is to protest recent proposals in Congress to cut the operating budget of the Social Security Administration.

Congress has proposed reductions of up to $882 million from President Obama's budget request for Fiscal 2012. The Social Security Administration has already put in place a hiring freeze covering most of its operations.
