It was a day to walk and talk with the animals at a sanctuary in Georgetown County Sunday.
S.C. Cares has 160 animals, many of them exotics like wolves and African tortoises. At Sunday's open house, visitors could feed and pet some of the sanctuary's many creatures.
The goal of the event was to raise awareness and money to care for the exotic animals.
"When they come out here and no matter what animal, whether it's one of the exotics or a wildlife or some of the domestics we've taken in, people tend to be drawn to a certain type of animal," said Cindy Hedrick, who operates the sanctuary. "And once they made that connection to the animal it makes them feel that connection, that whatever they want to donate, whatever they can donate, is going to that animal."
As an example of some of the costs of running the sanctuary, last year, S.C. Cares took in $17,000 worth of donated meat, Hedrick said. That was just for a dozen wolves and wolf hybrids.
