Darlington County authorities are waiting for preliminary autopsy results on a man who was shot and killed while he was being served a warrant.

Sheriff Wayne Byrd said shots were fired during an attempt to serve a warrant at a South Main Street business in Darlington around 3:15 p.m. Friday.

The coroner has identified the shooting victim as Ernest Lee Russell, jr., 54, of Darlington.

Byrd said the State Law Enforcement Division has been called in to investigate the shooting. He said several Darlington County deputies met with SLED agents Saturday and more will be interviewed in coming days.

Byrd said an autopsy was performed on Russell Saturday morning, but as of mid-afternoon, Byrd had not heard the results.
