FLORENCE -- Wednesday is National Day of Concern Student Pledge Against Gun Violence day.

Students at Moore Intermediate School in Florence pledged to stay away from guns. The school held a special program to help students understand gun violence. Several law enforcement officers, including officers with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) told students thousands of kids in this country die every year because of gun violence.

Some students shared stories of how they've lost loved ones because of gun violence. An 11-year-old girl said her cousin was shot and killed on Thanksgiving day two years ago. She made a vow to stay away from guns.

An 11-year-old boy also shared his story, saying cousin died after accidentally shooting himself while cleaning a gun.

The school's guidance counselor wanted the students to understand what could happen if guns get into the wrong hands. She said gang members were shooting at each other when one of the bullets entered her relative's home. Luckily, her relative wasn't hit. But she warned students that her relative could have died.

At the end of the program, the students pledged to stay away from guns and to report to a teacher or adult if they see another student with a gun.
