More than a dozen women turned out Saturday for the first ever, one day seminar called "Take Your Seat" at Coastal Carolina University.
Coastal's Women in Philanthropy and Leadership helped conduct the session, aimed at teaching women the in's and out's of conducting effective political campaigns.
The Southeastern Institute for Women in Politics conducted a morning and afternoon session. The free event focused on topics like social media, grassroots efforts, campaign finance, fundraising, and campaign management.
"The more women that we have that we train, and who become role models to other women, the more we'll get to run and win," Barbara Rackes with the Southeastern Institute for Women in Politics said.
According to the Southeastern Institute for Women in Politics' website, South Carolina ranks 50th in the nation in terms of women in public office, "In the current Legislature, there were no women state Senators and 16 women members of the House of Representatives, meaning just 8.8 percent of the Legislature was female."
Jade Perry, a graduating CCU senior, attended the seminar.
"We need to get involved. We're half the population I think we need to be more involved in our own process," she said.
